Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Self Portrait

Open Shapes

Open shapes

This is not really a self portrait…it just looks like me. Had it been me, I probably would have wrecked it trying to make myself look better. It tells the story of a woman standing impatiently by her beach chair for her husband to find her. You can’t see him, but he just keeps on talking – he was on vacation too.

This is one of those unconscious pieces that remind me how to paint. The beautiful background with the jagged edge on the left is just enough to suggest vegetation. You can feel the sun. The limited palette of Scarlet Lake, Turquoise and Raw Sienna balances beautifully. The big deal however is how the open white shapes of white paper define and connect the figure to the background.

Sincerely,
