Painting of the Week – Watercolor Sketch of Medora

Studying the Landscape

Studying the Landscape

A museum in California sent me a 5” x 5” piece of watercolor paper asking me to paint on it as a donation. It was the perfect size for a simplified color sketch of an early morning Medora, ND scene. Happily, it raised money for them. I am debating whether to paint this in acrylic or watercolor. What do you think?

Yesterday, my students practiced mixing color on the paper. I love how the colors change in each shape in this sketch. Simple descriptive shapes overlap. Notice how the edges of each shape are different in color as the paint moves and mixes colors while it is in a puddle state.

Sincerely,
