Autumn Reflections – Painting of the Week
Circle of Gold
Last fall, the sun created a circle of golden light around these trees across the Red River from me. For Autumn Reflections, my goal was to capture that golden circle. A referenced geometric compositional shape is generally irregular. Here it is placed off-center and its irregularity keeps it interesting. The diagonal light strokes, seen first in the greener group of branches on the left, line up vertically and then reverse direction in the sunlight, adding much to the design.
My goal was to capture and keep that circular shape of the light through the trees and the water. Easier said than done. First, a very dark grid was painted over the whole canvas even including some black rectangles. The trees, when roughed in, interrupted the circle making that more difficult to define them. Choices had to be made to balance this out.
Sincerely,
