Garden’s Edge – Painting of the Week

Texture

Texture

The only thing about spring that is predictable is that the weather may dramatically change from warm to cold and back again. It was sunny and warm the last 2 days, but its back to snow this weekend. There is time to prepare for a beautiful summer, but the cold weather is certainly more conducive for painting in my studio. One great thing about paintings full of sunshine, like Garden’s Edge, is that they provide a steady positive glow you can bring to your mind anytime.

Artists usually develop a range of textures between smooth to dramatic for their work that they are comfortable with. Many times, this is done with brushwork or mark-making. Mark-making is an artistic term that refers to the use of different patterns, lines, textures and shapes when creating a piece of art which aren’t necessarily made with a brush. As a Neo-Impressionist, I primarily use color and a flat brush, turning and twisting it like a calligraphy pen, making calligraphic shapes of visual and often physical texture.
