Harvest of Promise – Painting of the Week
Making Good Choices
One of my favorite paintings is Harvest of Promise. You can see the original at Sanford Hospital in downtown Fargo, right near the dining hall. It marks a significant moment in my artistic career. In 2006, I had just published my book, Progressive Painting – Your Creative Journey, carefully managing the project and believing all expenses were covered. Lo and behold, an overlooked $10,000 bill suddenly arrived in the mail.
That was devastating. My mind raced: “Perhaps I could make a bunch of cheap paintings that would sell fast.” After panicking over those ideas, a clear thought came to me: “God did not give me all of this talent just to paint cheap little paintings that sell quickly.” Right before this revelation, I had gathered inspiration for a new piece… and chose instead to start a large, beautiful sunflower painting.
Two days later, representatives from Merit Care (now Sanford) called and came to view my work. They selected 12 originals for their newly remodeled hospital, and what sold them was that sunflower painting. I felt deeply blessed because I had chosen to put forward my best work. It truly was a Harvest of Promise.
