Student’s Notes – Painting of the Week
The Joy of Teaching
If you enjoy children, you might enjoy reading these notes. It was a joy to teach the Park Christian 3rd graders how to draw and paint Samson’s portrait, from my book Samson’s Gift. The kids told their teacher they learned how to trick their brain by drawing upside down, and to use more water for lighter colors and less water for darker ones. There were many oohs and aahs while I read to them. You should have seen their smiles when holding up their paintings. I look forward to teaching my Beginning Watercolor workshop this today.
It’s been an exciting week all around as I won two awards. In the Beauty, watercolor and gouache won an award of Merit at the Northstar Watercolor Society’s first online exhibition. Notecards are available with this image.

My painting, Iris Impression, earned me the title of ‘Painter of the Year’ from the Coachella Valley Watercolor Society (CVWS) in Palm Desert, California. The painters qualify for entering work in this competition by being an award winner for “Painter of the Month”. CVWS provides many art opportunities to the community and has member of all levels of experience. Iris Impression started in a Gouache demo last February. The CVWS workshop director’s request for a Gouache class, got me serious about studying this opaque media. Gouache, is one of the oldest painting media. Recently, manufacturers of these paints have revived them with exciting and significant improvements. Holbein and Winsor Newton, are my favorite brands.
Sincerely,
