Background Decisions
These Agave plants lined the fence at Sunnylands Estates here in Rancho Mirage, California. I had just stopped on a Plein Air painting and turned around to see this glorious site. In the two hours, the light had dramatically changed and all of these plants were lit up displaying their beautiful color. Gated Community became an idea for a new painting.
The watercolor paper I drew on was not what I thought it was and immediately told me to paint in the Agave leaves continuously and get most everything in one continuous wash. What showed up were masses of dynamic shapes that didn’t have any depth. After the leaves were dry I painted in some fence shapes in varied colors and worked in some smaller background Agave plants between the leaves. Not knowing what to do the next day, I then turned the painting upside down and played with mixing plant and fence shapes. It was the right solution.
