Painting of the Week

Paintings of the Week – Lakeside & Down the Road

Testing an Idea

Testing an Idea

Every year Bismarck Art & Galleries Association has the Square Foot Show as a fundraiser. It opens on Tuesday, April 30th and patrons make a mad dash to buy the originals from 5pm – 7pm for $155 each. I used the two 12” x 12” paintings to test out an idea. This was a great way to learn how a landscape painting works. “Lakeside” surprised me. The Plains Art Gala is also coming up May 4th 7pm – 12pm where you may bid online or in person for Plenty for All and many other beautiful works. Starting bids are at 2/3rd’s their value and you may start bidding now and help their auction considerably. Register to bid here online and/or buy tickets for the 2024: Sci-Fi Artistry Spring Gala.

In these studies, I used value and pattern to see if they work. In “Lakeside”, the square of dark Green leaves connect to the dark roof a making a nice shape and the complementary warm side of the building connects to the water. I walk by these cottages at the lake all the time and usually just admire the interesting shadows on them. This piece has simplicity and balance. In “Down the Road” the palette was limited and the contrast is in the ground’s strongly lit areas out of shadow. I love all the diagonals in the brushwork and think this is beautiful.

Sincerely,
