Painting of the Week – Forest Glow

High Key Painting

High Key Painting

Sometimes something new just happens in a painting, and if you just work with it, it can be amazing. A cool walk on our last lake weekend of the summer rendered some beautiful fall photographs. “Forest Glow” is one of two forest scenes commissioned based on paintings from 2006.  They are quite different than their inspiration. Luckily, my patron approves the change.

On top of a diagonal based grid, the foliage and sky were painted on top. Instead of painting the shapes wet on dry, I let the foliage shapes and sky shapes run together creating this beautiful soft glow as it overlapped the grid. Next, golden leaf shapes and tree trunks covering the branches were layered on top of the yellow and blue in a transparent, abstract manner. The contrast of the trees is softer making this a high key painting, meaning the value of the lightness or darkness of colors range between 1-7 if 1 = white & 10 = black.

Sincerely,

If you are looking to advance your painting skills, or try something new, I highly recommend my

Country Garden Watercolor Workshop

The workshop is three Wednesday’s from 10:00- 3:30 May 15, 22, & 29th at the Fargo Country Club. A lovely Lunch is included “Chef’s Choice” each day is included in the price. This format was highly appreciated last year by the students. We will explore the grid, and work on some brushwork and technique that will immediately improve the paint quality of your paintings, and design. All of these things can move you forward to success.

You can paint any subject you want, just bring your photographs or you can paint along with me. To me, country garden means: landscape- could have little buildings, flowers- anything garden or farm. Here are some examples of some things I am considering painting and class members can choose what they want me to paint from my ideas.  It’s not too late to sign up, and I think you will be glad you did.
