Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Cantata

Organizing Clusters

Organizing Clusters

This 2006 original watercolor of Canna Lillies is still a favorite. Just prior to painting Cantata, part of my notecard Seed Pack collection, I taught a workshop on Mixing Reds. The interaction between students and the teacher certainly has mutual benefits. Concentrating on a single goal is very powerful. See how the bright Reds coming forward are enhanced by the duller ones.

It is good to have goals like making Red dominant, but you can also stage your goals. For example, I concentrated on planning the composition first. Painting flowers can be difficult and very confusing. For “Cantata”, I carefully spaced three forward flower clusters and later connected them with background Reds.

Sincerely,
