Painting of the Week

Recycled – Painting of the Week

Procrastination vs Love

Procrastination vs Love

A few years ago, a neighbor invited me to take pictures of their garden for painting. Next to the fence they Recycled this bicycle, filling the baskets with Impatiens. Their idea was a fun one to paint. Alas, I had the painting going, and then messed it up. It was depressing. Pulling it out of the closet the other day, with energy and renewed love, I worked to finish it. Losing my photo may have helped. With a new attitude and looking at other flower photos, it came to life. Such a joy this piece is.

Sometimes we just need to take a break from a piece to make it turn out. Often the worst thing you can do is keep messing with something you are having trouble with. When I first started painting, I used to work on them so they were totally wrecked…in order to finish them. The truth is, you do have to finish pieces to learn and procrastinating can be a bad habit. Procrastination can be fear based…make it love based. Slowing down the process allows your mind to reveal different ways to work around a problem, perhaps taking multiple sessions. At that point, do whatever you need to do to make it a painting. Forget rule-based pre-conceived ideas of what it is acceptable and have fun. Then pull out another!

Sincerely,
