Painting of the Week – Sparkling Light

Create Drama with Contrast

Create Drama with Contrast

Perhaps you have noticed a white building looking particularly bright in the morning. Here the big white clouds against a dark blue sky behind the trees aren’t casting their shadows on the scene. Right after a sunrise, the sun dramatically strikes objects at a lower angle creating Sparkling Light. It is my opinion that this time of day has the most pure light. The contrast is greatest between the white house and the dark trees making it important.

Pontoons are much loved for a family boat ride but their boxy shape is “rarely” inspiring to paint. You really need to focus on the lighting. Boat lifts literally degrade the beauty of the shoreline requiring a trick to paint them attractively. To make them less noticeable, minimize the contrast and/or join similar objects to create more interesting shapes.

Sincerely,
