Painting of the Week – New York Times

The Warm and the Cool

The Warm and the Cool

We all feel color temperature. Cloudy gray mornings are cool, dry dusty days are warm. Color can powerfully suggest mood by demonstrating a specific temperature: warm like the Sun, and cool like the sea and can be greatly varied in value range. In our homes, we probably have neutrals or a color scheme that tends to be warmer– Reds, Oranges & Yellows, or cooler – Blues, Violets and Green. Most people gravitate towards wearing their favorite colors which often have a dominant temperature. Planning color palettes can really make a painting.

See the paintings below and notes about their temperature. I welcome all to learn more at my:

The Warm and the Cool

New York Times This night scene sports cool dark dominant blues and violets

Nice House By warming up French Ultramarine Blue considerably with Raw Sienna and Permanent Rose, “Nice House” is a warm dominant painting.

Charleston Light This painting is dramatic because of the darkness rich cool shadows and colors  cast on the white house.

Formalized Living While lighter in value, there is still a dominance of cool colors making this piece cool, yet we still feel warmth in the reflected light in the porch bays.

Southern Romance This is a warm dominant painting. See the warm tones in the shadows and Olive Greens.

Vintage Romance This one is predominantly cool as many dark blue greens and darker cool reds are mixed or set side by side.

Traffic Patterns is warm dominant with all its browns and yellow greens, the smaller complementary cool violets against the yellow car give the whole painting a spark.

Roadside Stop was tricky but you can see the cool greens dominating and you are facing the shadow side of the building so it is cool.

Roadside Stop won a
