Painting of the Week – Fall Dream
Impressionism
There are many shows right now for you to enjoy including the 65th Midwestern Invitational Exhibition of Fine Art at the Rourke Art Museum where the theme is “The Omnipotence of Dreams: A Century of Surrealism”. It is bound to be very interesting. My piece however is Impressionistic not Surrealism. Surrealism is more an impression of the mind or dreams with an irrational juxtaposition of shapes. Impressionists use color and brush work to create an impression of a subject. Fall Dream is based on a deep look over the marsh at some colorful trees I wanted to paint. I really like this piece and feel that the theme pushed me to be a little more experimental.
There are many similar sized brush strokes in this piece. Distance is shown here by meshing together smaller brushstrokes to make tree like shapes and the foreground has larger brushstrokes to suggest bushes and leaves in the foreground. The underlying pattern of movement in the colors is what makes the piece work.
