Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Daily Catch

Complimentary Reflections

Complimentary Reflections

These avid fishermen seem to show up in my photographs quite frequently as painting boats has always interested me. In fact, the day I finished “Daily Catch”, I considered waving them down and hollering “I painted you!” They were pretty far out and busy casting away, so I enjoyed a hot tub instead.

This painting invited me to experiment with the water. The trees behind were dark and the water was light. First, I added dark reflections from the trees in the water and then took them out making the water light overall. A big white ripple from a boat added to divide up the space the water and then blended back in. The water had turned turquoise and the sky was dull. Adding a pale complementary Red-Orange to the sky and reflecting it vertically in the water made the piece come to life. One of the great things about acrylic is you can make changes.

Sincerely,
