Painting of the Week – Sejourne Marimba Concerto
Mixing the Darks
This musical arrangement features a historical memory of a young orchestra in concert, despite COVID-19. Commissioned by the parents of the Marimba player, this 16” x 21” original watercolor was very challenging to paint. It speaks of how each of us adjust and grow through the events in our lives.
Visually, the picture moves the eye through connected black shapes and patterned tan shapes. The color changes are subtle in each. The black paint was not mixed from a tube instead it was mixed using the darkest pigments, and the darkest were mixed from the two complimentary colors Quinacradone Violet and Winsor Green. Transparency can be maintained in watercolor when mixing darker colors together. Choosing other dark colors to mix can add variation to the darks.
Sincerely,
