Glazing
Nelson’s Market is a popular farmers market in the lake country that is fun to shop at and paint. You can see the gardens full of vegetables and flowers right down the hill. With their pickup partially loaded with corn they drove up to gather more fresh flowers to sell.
Beginning with a royal blue under painting, the building, gas tanks and pickup were roughed in. My eagerness to continue painting “Inventory Pickup” the following weekend, however, was completely disrupted with horror over its garish palette. Finally, I decided to glaze (a transparent wash) over parts of the painting with a complementary color to tone it down. For example, if it was too red, I put a green glaze over it and if it was too green, I would put a red glaze over it. The colors kept their intensity (brightness or dullness of a color) where I didn’t glaze them. That made it work!
Sincerely,
