Painting of the Week – Gallant Spirits

Using Gray

Using Gray

Gallant Spirits (no longer available) brings back memories of a planned fall photo shoot near Kindred, North Dakota. The sun was right but like yesterday, the wind had already blown away most of the colorful foliage in the countryside. Happily, the shelterbelts around this farmstead protected this area from the wind. The vibrant oranges and yellow green trees against the blue gray silos made a beautiful background for the horses.

This 2011 painting was an early success using acrylic paint. I had earnestly started using Acrylic in the fall of 2009 and had a lot to learn. The reason these colors are so bright is I added white paint to the colors to lighten them and the complimentary colors to tone them down. It was some time later I learned that adding gray to a dark color would lighten it without changing the hue.

Sincerely,
