Painting of the Week – In the Beauty

Pattern

Pattern

In the Beauty features these beautiful flowering trees. Apparently these are called pear trees, but they do not bear fruit. Found in Marina del Ray, California a beautiful scent made me look up from my phone to see these sparkling trees as I walked under them in awe. The flowers were so huge they covered most of the foliage.

Despite the fact I prepped with value sketches and a warm up painting, it was a difficult to paint the flowers in the trees. You may have seen my reel on Instagram. Three times I put this painting away in total frustration. Adding Gouache helped but what really made a difference was turning the painting upside down and playing a pattern game. I varied the rhythm placing the petals chanting (up to the edge), (not up to the edge) and (over the edge). The edge was the tree branches.
