Creating a Challenging Sketch
I was commissioned to create a painting of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd sanctuary in Moorhead, MN. Armed with approximately 20 photographs and Google, great effort went into finding and creating a diverse and attractive congregation.
The approved composition was sketched and adjusted on 5 pieces of drawing paper taped together. The stain glass looks busy, however, the value of the colors used will diminish or bring out areas simplifying the painting. The marker on the sketch creates a stencil to be traced onto watercolor paper using a window as a light box. Drawing them in marker also helps me see additional corrections needed. They can be cut out and redone before the transfer. The goal is to provide a trusted sketch before I begin painting.
