Taking a Tour

Taking a Tour

These sketches are from an eye-opening tour that Paul and I took viewing the windmills in Kinderdijk, Netherlands on the Rein river. The windmills mill water. The millers control the water level of rich peat fields for the farmers that live along a 6 foot deep stream they keep filled. That stream then flows to large augers that pull the water up to the Rein River on the other side of the dyke.

The millers, hired by the farmers, live with their families in the windmills so they can monitor the water 24 hours a day. Similar to Laura Ingall’s Wilder, their homes are charming, well organized and unique because of the limited space. Even baby’s cribs were above the bed in the master bedroom. The humming of the mills lulled them to sleep. The millers wives managed gardens, crafted their children’s clothes and had outbuildings made from the reeds for animals. They even washed their dishes in the stream. In the summer the men caught eels to fish with and in the winter competed in ice skating races to win fresh meat or cash.

I had fun sketching out different aspects of the tour from my pictures. I slowly drew them out with pen and painted in the darks. The house we saw is actually a museum, but a miller really lives there.

Sincerely,
