Painting of the Week – Let’s Go Sailing

let the paint take over

Let the Paint Take Over!

 This scene is of the “Pelican Lake Yacht Club”. While teaching a workshop in Henning, Minnesota, my students chose this sketch from several for a demonstration. Drawing it out on watercolor paper, the key white space had nothing in it. Luckily, in my bag was a photograph of figures that worked magically for developing the center of Interest.

After protecting the whites with masking tape, I painted water over the piece and dropped in a loose unplanned under- painting. It added rhythm to the piece, reflections from the water onto the boats and visual texture.  The bird flying added kind of an exclamation point to the scene. Sometimes you need to take something away, other times you can add to make a painting work. It was really fun to just let the paint take over.

Sincerely,
