Painting of the Week – Winter Solstice

Painting the Snow

Painting the Snow

Many of us are sad to see the weather cool down and some love it. The forecasts that show snow plows warning you how to pack your car for safety are meant to be helpful. Remember the beauty and wonder of the snow as it settles softly onto the trees branches like in my watercolor Winter SolsticeIt’s darker earlier now, and the snow reflects light extending our view at night.

Snow is a great subject to help you learn about contrast. Planning is necessary. The trick is to paint the shadows on the snow first then paint the darks around them. For snow shapes surrounded by snow, draw out the white shapes and paint the shadowed snow around them.

Sincerely,
