Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Summer Rain

Light Direction

Light Direction

Don’t’ you love a rainstorm? The air changes right before a storm and the humidity comes up. The sounds change as the insects and animals adjust to the changing weather. On the prairie, you can see the clouds for miles. In Summer Rain, these clouds will be soon be raining on his fields. This farmer is very neat and must have a building for all of his equipment as there wasn’t even a truck sitting out. I thought about adding one.

This painting began as a demonstration on using our skills to develop how light affects shapes. The west side of the buildings are closer to the sun so they are painted in a lighter value. Notice there are also value changes in the trees and bushes too, but it is much more subtle. Their sphere and cone-like shapes are also lighter on the left and slightly darker as they turn away from the sun. The light source needs to be consistent on all objects.

Sincerely,
