Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Southern Romance

Working with Reflected Light

This home is in Charleston, South Carolina and the horse and the buggy were discovered in Wisconsin. From my piles of photography, I combined these two incomplete subjects into a painting. A deep desire to paint this mossy tree and carefully crafted porch helped me to discover this particularly romantic idea. It all came together in a sketch.

See the warm tones on the undersides of the architecture. This painting exhibits how the warmth from the earth reflects upwards. White is the most reflective color and was the perfect backdrop for the medium values of the tree that connects into the dark upper right corner of the painting. The cool blue shadows especially with the spikes of Burgundy, keep the color fresh. Notice all the subtle color changes in the whites. It was a joy to paint.
