Making a cool dominant painting
Painting of the Week “Garden Song” by Fargo Artist Ellen Jean Diederich
Phlox, Coneflowers and Salvia are some of my favorite flowers. In fact, I went little nuts on them in this painting. The palette for “Garden Song” is cool dominant with its blue, violet and magenta hues. The streak of lemon yellow from the Coreopsis, with their red orange accents breaks the coolness 1/3 of the way from the bottom contrasting the temperature! The cool harmonies of the colors give this painting it’s glow and the patterning of of the petals makes it a truly Impressionistic experience as your eye mixes the colors together.
See “Garden Song” along with several other floral paintings by regional artists at the Red Door Art Gallery in Wahpeton, ND for their Garden Painting exhibit. It is on display until July 31st , their hours vary so call ahead or make an appointment with Dar at 701-591-1010. The Red Door Gallery is located at 418 Dakota Avenue, Wahpeton, ND.
