Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Into the Mist

A Theme Can Inspire New Ideas

I’m looking out at the fog this morning and it made me think of this painting “Into the Mist”. The idea is based on a memory of searching for strays on the farm, when our dairy cattle were having too much fun to come in. The truth is, I photographed these horses in Texas who were looking forward to their 5 p.m. routine. They wandered up to the fence early for fresh water and the rancher shortly showed up with some with some beautiful alfalfa for them. It made for a great photo session.

It’s on purpose that the horse on left has almost a skeletal look about him. “Into the Mist” was painted for the 2019 Midwestern at the Rourke Art Museum for their ‘Ghost Like’ theme Zeitgeist. With that in mind, I transferred my memory on the farm and the horse experience into a visual. By adding mist painting in a gestural manner, the bone structure of the horses was exaggerated. It worked for me. This year the theme is “In Your Own Skin”- I am open to any suggestions!

Sincerely,

READ ABOUT MY GRANT FROM THE ARTS PARTNERSHIP

Meet the 9 local artists who got grants for their work in ceramics, painting, neon and public art

To cultivate a unique arts community full of vibrant and diverse crafts, The Arts Partnership awards grants annually to encourage growth through projects, classes and exhibitions backed by real dollars.

The projects submitted are judged by a panel of jurors to determine how the work will impact individual artistic growth. For recipients, the grants are also the perfect opportunity to try new things, or in the case of Ellen Jean Diederich, a chance to change up her technique in a craft she’s dedicated her life to.
