Painting of the Week – State Theatre

Trees & Architecture

Trees and Architecture

This painting was commissioned for one of Avera’s Assisted Living Facilities in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It is always exciting to use my knowledge another way and discover something new. I remember the tremendous effort made to create this large watercolor, a 26” x 42” image. Today it feels good to see the simplicity of the large shapes with their imperfect edges and lyrical trees working together!

The transparency of watercolor is what makes this painting work. The loose tree shapes were painted first and then the varied browns were painted into them. Many shapes are simplified by connecting similar values (the lightness or darkness of a color) into larger interesting shapes. For example, the white cars join together against the grayish blue cars connected to the buildings behind them. Notice the green branches over the State Theatre sign. The figures are the most colorful & patterned shapes.

Sincerely,
