October’s Glow – Painting of the Week
Painterly Brush Work
Impressionistic art is defined by expressive, colorful brushwork that creates the feeling of a subject rather than a literal depiction. October’s Glow showcases this approach through a golden autumn canopy that frames a sunlit, inviting white farmhouse. This painting actually began as a lush spring view; as I continued layering richer tones, it naturally transformed into a warm fall scene.
To achieve this texture, I varied the angle of my brush to match the form of each subject. Notice the vertical strokes forming the tree trunks, the soft clusters of leaves resting on the branches, and the rhythmic flow of the grass bending in the breeze. Rather than blending these marks into strict realism, I purposely left the brushwork distinct and visible, allowing the shifting colors to guide the viewer’s eye.
