Geometric and Organic Shapes

Geometric and Organic Shapes

This large watercolor of Downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota was created for Avera Health. It reminds me of traveling through a town and looking for a good place to have lunch. Before Yelp, checking out the number of parked cars at a restaurant was the key. There are several architectural feats & interesting buildings there. This view made a painting for me.

Geometric shapes are best described as manmade shapes such as buildings, cars and signs which need light and shadow to portray their dimension. Organic shapes from nature like people, trees and flowers are irregular in shape, but knowing their most related geometric shape help portray them. Like landscaping, I love how the trees connect to and soften the architecture. Notice the stylization of the building tops and trees in the upper right corner.

Sincerely,
