Painting of the Week

Mystic Boat Ride – Painting of the Week

Aerial Perspective

The lake has been so beautiful these September weekends. It is so quiet; you can almost have the whole lake to yourself. The quietness added to this Mystic Boat Ride on a partly-sunny day makes it look like they can keep going on forever. It’s interesting how lake property pretty much gives you access to the entire lake…as if you have a huge back yard, though it’s generally called the front.

Here I wanted to paint the inlets on the lake accenting how the shoreline turns into a faded blue shape in the distance. Watercolor seems ideal for painting water and atmospheric space. Showing how colors appear cooler and lighter in value in the distance and warmer and darker in the foreground is called aerial perspective or atmospheric perspective.

Sincerely,
