Studying Shapes

This “Farmstead” is practically in the field of recently baled hay. The colorful rows of cut hay wrap around a shelter belt casting its’ shadow over some of them. It was exciting to see how different the bales looked in the light versus the shadow. This reminds me of how precious land is because this farmer is not going to waste any of it. “Farmstead” will be at the upcoming Studio Crawl.

At my workshop in Alabama, this piece was used to reinforce a study of light on a variety of basic shapes. To simplify, break down the painting process to planning, drawing and then keep focused on shapes while painting them. Slow down to engage your skills and timing with watercolor. It takes patience to capture the mesmerizing color.
