Forest Light – Painting of the Week

Dark Underpainting

I photographed this scene from my walks up and down the big hill at the lake. Scotch Pines are so strong and beautiful. One day, I’ll paint them big when those sneaky vines growing nearby turn red or may be paint this larger. Forest Light is in BAGA’s Square Foot Show opening next Tuesday.

In this painting, I tested out using a black underpainting as one of Jed Dorsey’s techniques learned in the Acrylic Live 2025. It required several layers to build up from the black but was fun to do. Acrylic is quite different from watercolor as you work dark to light versus light to dark. Light colors really pop against the black.
