Scenic Descent – Painting of the Week
The Beauty of Gouache
San Francisco is the polar opposite of Fargo, North Dakota. Their very steep streets would be impossible if they had ice and snow. This Scenic Descent leads you down to the San Francisco Bay where seafood restaurants, clam chowder and sourdough bread flavor the city. The “ding-ding” of those iconic street cars can still be heard today as they save the public countless steps. Displaying the bay in the distance adds a fun design feature as the horizon line is always at the viewers eye level.
I loved painting the pastel colorful light in this painting with gouache. The transparency of watercolor is beautiful, likewise, so are the opaque creamy colors of gouache. Both of these mediums mix with water but require different techniques. You can easily mix the two media together and get both effects in a painting by just adding a couple tubes of gouache to your supplies.
Explore this fun media at my Beginning Gouache Workshop October 24-26th in Fargo.
Sincerely,
