Palm Garden – Painting of the Week

Near Compliments

Near Compliments

Landscaping is so different in the desert. Large bearded palms grow wild near the mountain streams. If you drive towards the city of Palm Desert you know why they call it that… as you can see Palms ascending, one on top of another, toward the mountains. Palm Garden displays a few of the many aqua green plants that grow here with kind of a sandy mist in front of the mountain. Skilled gardeners decorate neighborhoods often adding fuchsia and red accents like bougainvillea.

Colors directly across the color wheel like Red & Green are complimentary colors.  Complimentary colors bring each other out when set side by side and tone each other down when mixed together.  I call Fuchsia and Turquoise “Near Compliments” as they are not directly across the color wheel, but that color relationship is rich and easy on the eye.  In this piece, see how the greens and blues are dominant while the reds & orange accents are quite toned down.

Sincerely,
