Hive Check-Up – Painting of the Week
Step by Step Painting
This is a second commissioned beekeeper painting. I thought you might enjoy seeing the process for the piece. My plan is to add a glaze (a transparent colored wash) over the beekeeper as the white in her gear needs to be toned down.

- First, the canvas was covered with warm colored paint. Next, the distant landscape was painted over it letting much of the warmth of the under painting show through giving the piece a glow. Most of the landscape shapes have rounded edges to give them volume.

2. The boxes were drawn in and the figure placed. I began roughing in the bee boxes.

3. Here I got farther with the details including adding some bees to the outside of the boxes. I switched this beekeeper out for the woman now in the painting who had purposely little detail which also required an adjustment in the background.
A tree was added behind my new beekeeper for contrast. More details were added to clean up the painting. I like how the yellow flower points to the beekeeper.
Sincerely,

P.S. The Pekin Art Fair is this weekend. It is a delightful event that many people return to each year. There is a competition along with art events for children. It makes a fun day trip.
