Blue Sunset – Painting of the Week
Low Key Painting
From Marina del Rey, California, using a grid under-painting, I chose this long format to display a variety of fishing boats, sail boats and yachts for Blue Sunset. It was very peaceful in the Marina. Other than a few impudent seals warming up on docks and a handful of walkers, I had the place to myself. It was tough to get a good photo of the boats with reflections as the docks were so close together.
With Acrylic paint, you work dark to light. The underpainting for this piece had an irregular bar of dark colors across the water line making it easier to use the dark values. When dark values are dominant, it is called a low-key painting. Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. Most of the boats were described in medium values and the few light values really pop making them interest areas which were dramatized with the complimentary color orange.
Sincerely,
