Handmade – Painting of the Week
Imperfections
These colorful baskets were made in Jordan. I snuck a display picture when no one was looking. The seller didn’t react. This was quite contrary from being chased by the basket weavers in Charleston, who didn’t want their picture taken. While hiding from them in a jewelry shop, the owner told me, “You are supposed to buy a basket and then ask to take a photo.” Live and learn. It was equally exciting to loosely paint the basket’s Handmade details.
To exaggerate the palette in these baskets, I used a grid underpainting and Gouache to pull some of the light colors out. Preferring to have fun while painting, I never paint anything perfect. The imperfections are consistent and tie the work together. It was also interesting to smear some of the gouache and later paint on top of it. The value contrast and the drama of the warms and cools really made this piece.
Sincerely,28th
