Columns in the Canyon – Painting of the Week
Desert Values
I raced out early one morning this week to join the Plein Air Painters. We met at the Coachella Valley Preserve. Like Columns in the Canyon, the large bearded Palms were covered with Dates, leaving only a sliver of a view of the sunlit mountain. I love the sole Palm directly ahead of me. It was cool when I started, but soon I was shedding a few layers.
It’s tough to paint under such pressure, and though fun, it’s not so easy. The pressures are: deciding what to paint, planning your piece and the effort to get it on paper before the light changes. The thing I did right was select a simple subject and not clutter it up. The mountain was almost the same value as the sky. That messed me up. First it was too light, then it was too dark, and then I had to lighten it up again. Apparently, I need to study painting mountains more. Maybe next time, I’ll just paint the mountain. This really helps me learn more about my subject matter.
Sincerely,

Among 100 best holiday gifts to give: Letter Writing, Journaling & Stationary
“Millennials and Genz Z are turning to more old-school and tradition forms of communication especially when it comes to letter writing and the use of stationery. In the past year, there were increases in searches for “cute stamps,” “penpal ideas,” penpal letters,” “handwritten letters,” and “snail mail gifts.” This will likely go beyond traditional loose-leaf and manila envelopes and veer more into personalized stationery, like thank you cards and envelopes.”
