Buddies – Painting of the Week

Out-Curves

Out-Curves

Happy Valentines to you – a little early! This simple painting of two cats was fun to create. Despite the fact that cat’s eyes are so fascinating, one of the cat’s eyes was not painted. What do you think about leaving it that way? This painting is about the color, shape and the softness of the cat’s fur. I find “Buddies” delightfully fresh and simple.

All the light colors were painted first and the darks were painted second when the paper was dry as a continuously changing color. The descriptive dark shapes have power not only because they are dark against light or that their color changes; but because they are created using out-curves. See how they continuously bump out presenting the underlying muscles of the cat in an interesting rhythm. The dark head connects to the red heart connecting you back to the background. Out-curves give volume to a shape, in-curves collapse a shape.

Sincerely,
