Clouds Over the Mountain – Painting of the Week

Working with the Environment

Working with the Environment

In December, I wanted to add some color to my bathroom in California and painted this mural. It is fascinating how the mountain and sky colors constantly change and how clouds go over and between them. Often, the mountains peak out over a cloud. Throughout the day, their magnificent shape changes colors from Blue to Grey to Cream, Sand, Purple, and Orange also with many variations. When you walk or drive towards them, sometimes they look bigger or smaller depending on your elevation.

Looking through my photos, a mountain seemed to be the perfect subject for the mural. Physically, there is always a danger factor when working on a ladder. There was a place where the ceiling was higher than the wall and that dictated the destination and size of the pure Blue-sky shape. The two top corners blended into the clouds. This worked well around the door too. Realizing how challenging this was made me limit the height of the mountain and that simplification worked well. I love how the greys and peach mixed in with the blues adding richness to the color.

Sincerely,

P.S. Thank you to all who stopped into the Desert Open Studios show at my California Studio—it was my first show here. I missed my Fargo friends though to my delight some neighbors did stop by on their vacation.
