The Fence Line – Painting of the Week
Painting a Hill
On County Road 20 headed back to Fargo, I spotted these Angus cows. This fence does a great job of keeping the cows out of the corn. Mowed along both sides, the cattle wouldn’t even be tempted to reach their head over it for a snack. The Fence Line provided an interesting perspective up the hill to the distant trees. I love the impressionistic loose brushwork used to create the textures seen in this picture.
The Red River Valley is so flat, it took many years for me to understand how to portray it in an interesting way. That has been good for my landscape skills. To paint the hill, I took time to layer many subtle value (lightness or darkness of a color) changes in the grasses. All of this reminds me of the time I was looking at a Monet years ago catching myself thinking, “That’s something I never paint – a hill”.
Sincerely,
