Painting of the Week

Portion of ‘The Fargo Scene’ – Painting of the Week

Foreground Figures

Foreground Figures

Who is in the painting and what are they doing? When viewing a painting with people in it, our eyes almost always immediately gravitate toward them. People are interesting, and a cityscape pretty much requires them. They are also a great way to break up the space and you can keep them very simple.

Work color and value when adding people. In this portion of a large painting of downtown Fargo, notice how the three figures on the left are similar in value (the lightness or darkness of a color) to the background around them. The grouping makes them an interesting shape that sits back because of their limited contrast. Just the opposite is true regarding the woman in the white coat with flowers walking in front of the dark car. She is more colorful and she is the whitest white against the darkest dark. Notice the balance of the violet and yellow background shapes shown here on the shaded side of the street.

Sincerely,
