Late-Night Reflections – Painting of the Week
Dramatic Contrast
As the sun sets, you see silhouettes of homes and lights begin to twinkle across the lake. It is fun to head out on the boat and enjoy the Late-Night Reflections. The pontoon’s engine purred as we safely floated by lit up cottages and castles displaying the shoreline. We slowed down and visited in front of this one watching the reflections from the lights. The owners must have been out on a boat ride too, so I left the dock out of play.
This painting has drama because the colors are not only contrasting from extreme light to extreme dark, they also are complimentary high key warm colors described against very dark cool colors. Analogous Colors (next to each other on the color wheel) enhance these color groups as they are harmonious. See how the dark green trees move to blue, to violet, burgundy and brown and they were also greyed down to suggest black as there is no color in the dark. The key to this piece lies in the proportions of dark and light.
Sincerely,
