Painting of the Week

Junction Point – Painting of the Week

Edges

Edges

It was fun to design and paint Junction Point. This birds-eye view of the land was from Texas and the horses and riders were seen on some California hikes. The lighting from my landscape photo was beautiful and it worked to contrast the streaks of light with the dark horses. During the painting process, the big surprise was how the shadows in the sand from the front horses made them look like they just crossed a stream.

There are so many bushes in this painting the brushwork on them became a massive challenge. There are layers of Grey Greens, bright Greens, warm Greens, cool Greens, pale Greens and dark Greens used to create them.  The blue tree in the distance kept getting bigger causing problems as I fell in love with it. Finally realizing it felt like the green was closing in on the riders from everywhere I focused on the edges of the painting and the solution was adding more sky which reduced the size of “that” tree. Using some scrappy paint at the end was perfect for texturizing some areas.

Sincerely,
