Painting the Rainbow – Painting of the Week

Inspiration from a 4-year-old

Inspiration from a 4-year-old

On our family vacation, I was kept busy painting with my granddaughter. The first day, we painted for 4 hours covering over 12 sheets of paper. She was in charge. I drew out shapes and she painted them in naming the colors as she added them. This plein air view of Grand Cayman was painted quickly from the 2nd floor where we worked. She decided to quit early that day. From above, the narrow line of the shadows under the trees interested me as well as the fact that the legs of the thatched gazebo disappeared into the bushes.

When I asked Isabella what color she wanted to use, she said “paint the rainbow”. She recited the colors in rainbow order always starting with red followed by pink, purple, blue, green, yellow and orange. We even did this while coloring together. Her paintings were bright and colorful. The day I did a value sketch in black was one she quit early. So, in this painting, the tree trunks that started with red and greens were like a rainbow. It was a fun way to paint.

Wishing you a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
