The Best is Yet to Be – Painting of the Week
Painting What you Know
Paul’s mother, Irene, loved mentioning the summer solstice. To her it was synonymous with the height of the lake season. Respecting our time is important and she set this sundial amongst large iron flowerpots and later suggesting it to me for subject matter. On it was the phrase “Grow Old with Me- The Best is Yet to Be”. This painting certainly took time. At one point I was so disgusted with it I put it in the sink and scrubbed off half of the paint before I could change my mind. It hung out in the closet for many years. This spring, I finally figured out how to finish it. Sometimes things get worse before they get better.
In art, one of the keys to drawing is “Paint what you see-not what you know”. It is so true, but there are always special considerations. My photographs of the beautiful scene were dull as it was a cloudy day. My effort to make this scene look sunny failed. Remembering that photos of flowers on overcast days made the colors appear more intense reminded me that intensifying the color was an option. Therefore, I used QoR High Chroma watercolors for a colorful melt of the gouache. That was excitingly successful!
P.S. This year the 67th Midwestern Invitational Exhibition of Fine Art at the Rourke Art Museum theme is the “The Pursuit of Happiness” Where you can see The Best is Yet to Be.
