Fountain Park – Painting of the Week

Connecting to the Background

Connecting to the Background

I walk by these fountains at different times almost every day at Mission Hills. Painted here is a small beautifully landscaped park that leads to a pool. It is a very peaceful scene and I felt like I could hear the fountains while painting them. Fountain Park began as a demonstration painting to promote my upcoming Neo-Impressionistic Acrylic Landscape Class in Palm Desert, CA January 15-18. If you had trouble signing up before, the link has been repaired. Paints are included, so all of the colors are listed merely as a future reference for students.

First, time was spent creating a simple varied light blue sky and then very dark colors were painted at the base for the water setting up a light pattern. Next the trees, bushes and rocks were sketched in over with a pencil you can erase with a wet paper towel. My photograph wasn’t great – the light source was unclear and the color was not as attractive as remembered. The decision was made to use a black and white photo to get those issues out of my head. This proved to be very freeing as it let me focus on the values choosing to contrast the trunks of the palm trees standing out against the background or using the leaves behind them to display them connecting them to the background. This really enhanced the whole painting.

Sincerely,
