Pedestrian Crossing – Painting of the Week
Creating Mood
In case the winter blues have struck, feast your eyes on this piece, put yourself there and you might warm up. In Pedestrian Crossing, the street is lined with alternating hanging baskets of Petunias, which you might know I love because of my book “Where’s Petunia?” If you have been a student of mine, you might even giggle knowing how much I enjoy painting spheres. This scene with the hazy early morning view of the downtown Fargo had my full attention. The woman going with flowers to cheer someone up just makes you smile.
The selection of the value range (lightness and darkness of a color) and color palette are the most powerful elements for setting up the mood. This painting is cool in temperature, using predominantly Burgandys, Blues, Greens, and pale Yellows. The dominance of midtones in this piece also makes the color glow. The woman becomes the center of interest as her jacket is the whitest white against the darkness of her hair. The soft spherical shape of the flowers and simplified details on the cars add to peaceful mood.
Sincerely,
