The Plains – Painting of the Week

Proportions

Proportions

When driving through the Red River Valley you see fertile fields interrupted by shelter belts; keeping the soil from blowing away and providing homes for wildlife. The Plains features a misty morning when the sunflowers are just starting to bloom. The flatness of this terrific farm land combined with GPS for planting straight, just might allow you to look down a row for a mile. Creating interest with a flat landscape is challenging as the shapes seem to all line up in a long horizontal band. A Magnificent sky was utilized to create a vertical composition.

Placing the horizon line is a major decision for any painting…seen or unseen. Putting it in the center can be disastrous. The viewer may not know what you think is important if shapes are the same size. Similar to cutting a deck of cards, “thin to win” seems to be a better choice for interest.  Contrasting the proportions of related shapes is also a powerful composition tool for storytelling and design.

Sincerely,
